A Perfect Summer on Lake Balaton

Hungarians call it ‘the Sea’ — and when you stand on the southern shore of Lake Balaton on a still July evening, watching the water turn gold under the setting sun, you understand why. At 77 kilometres long, Balaton is Central Europe’s largest lake, and for over a century it has been the summer playground of Budapest.

The northern shore is where you’ll find the most character. Tihany, a peninsula jutting into the lake, is home to a Benedictine abbey founded in 1055 and some of the region’s best lavender fields. Below the abbey, the old fishing village has been transformed into a charming cluster of galleries, craft shops, and restaurants serving pike-perch fresh from the lake.

Wine lovers should head to the Badacsony hill, a volcanic mesa rising dramatically above the northern shore. The basalt soils produce exceptional white wines — Olaszrizling and Szürkebarát — best enjoyed at one of the hillside cellars with a panoramic view of the lake. The Laposa Birtok and Németh Pince are both excellent choices.

For families, the southern shore offers shallow, warm water perfect for young children. Siófok is the liveliest town, with waterfront bars and a busy nightlife scene, while Balatonlelle and Fonyód are quieter alternatives. Wherever you stay, don’t miss a lángos — the deep-fried dough topped with sour cream and cheese that is the undisputed snack king of Hungarian summers.

The best time to visit is late June through August, when water temperatures reach a balmy 25°C. But September has its own appeal: the crowds thin, the light turns amber, and the harvest festivals fill the villages with music, wine, and the scent of roasting chestnuts.
